Source: IRIN A violent crackdown on undocumented Rohingya refugees in southern Bangladesh is pushing humanitarian conditions to the brink at a makeshift camp for them, aid workers and campaigners warn.

DHAKA Thursday, December 31, 2009 (IRIN) - Low-lying Bangladesh with its 230 rivers and dense population of over 150 million has long been prone to flooding, soil erosion and saltwater intrusion, but climate change could aggravate the situation, experts and government officials warn.

Bangladesh's Kalinagar village, crammed on an elevated dyke, is a landscape flooded with straw and clay huts covered in blue tarpaulin. Over 14,000 people displaced by a combination of Cyclone Aila and rising water levels struggle to survive there.

I had come to listen to their stories. And as the crowds gathered it seemed that everyone from a 14-year-old child to an elderly woman knew exactly how to discuss climate change without using acronyms - something well-educated people in the West struggle to do.

DHAKA Wednesday, May 27, 2009 (IRIN) - Relief efforts for victims of Cyclone Aila in Bangladesh are continuing, the country’s Disaster Management Bureau (DMB) says, but effective early warning systems and evacuation measures seem to have saved countless lives.

Uddin fled his native Myanmar in 1991 and sought refuge in Bangladesh. With training and education from UNHCR, he prospered in a refugee camp. But he still misses his village after years of exile.
