Source: ECHO Refugees from Burundi are facing a deadline of the end of June to leave the one remaining Burundian refugee camp in Tanzania. Over the last two years, the stabilisation of the political situation in Burundi has meant it is now safe for refugees to return home.

MAKAMBA Friday, April 24, 2009 (IRIN) - The UN Refugee Agency has resumed its repatriation of the "old caseload" of Burundian refugees in Tanzania - those who fled the country following the civil war in 1972 - with the latest returnees being a group of 473 who arrived on 22 April.

Source: IRIN Denise Nzohabonayo, a mother of four, was repatriated from Nduta refugee camp in Tanzania in July 2008 to the Nyabitare transit site near Ruyigi in eastern Burundi. After a month, stranded and with no home to return to, Nzohabonayo left Nyabitare for Muriza Butaganzwa commune, also in Ruyigi, in the hope that she would finally get some permanent shelter for her family. Being a landless returnee is not easy, as Nzohabonayo told IRIN.

The pace of repatriation of Congolese refugees from camps in Tanzania is picking up, but their reintegration in South Kivu province comes with challenges.
